New tariffs on American goods take effect
Canada’s retaliatory tariffs began September 8, imposing duties of 15%, 25% or 50% on selected American products, including steel, dairy, appliances and agricultural equipment. The measures were announced in August; today’s development is their implementation, following the breakdown of trade negotiations.
Why Americans should know: American exporters now face higher costs selling these goods into Canada. That can put pressure on orders, business margins and jobs in industries dependent on cross-border trade.
