Measles outbreak nears 1,000 reported deaths
Bangladesh reported that deaths among suspected measles patients reached 999 by Tuesday, with more than 166,000 suspected cases recorded since March. Hospitals remain under pressure despite an emergency vaccination campaign. The outbreak is older than 24 hours; today’s development is the newly reported scale of the crisis.
Why Americans should know: Measles can spread internationally through travel, and this outbreak shows how quickly a preventable disease can return when routine vaccination systems break down.
