August tied the record for Earth’s hottest month
New Copernicus data show that August 2026 had an average global temperature of 16.96°C—1.65°C above the preindustrial average—tying July 2023 as the hottest month measured. One month above 1.5°C does not, by itself, mean the Paris Agreement’s long-term limit has been formally crossed.
Why Americans should know: Sustained global heat increases the risks of dangerous temperatures, wildfires, crop losses and costly damage to infrastructure—including inside the United States.
