Israel / Middle EastDeveloping — voting under way; no result yet
Israel votes in its first national election since the October 7 attack
More than seven million eligible voters are choosing a new Knesset in a close contest centered on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former military chief Gadi Eisenkot. Polls close Tuesday night, but Israel's coalition system means a governing outcome may take weeks even after ballots are counted.
Why Americans should know: The result will shape Israel's approach to unresolved wars, Gaza and the occupied West Bank, as well as relations with Washington. Americans should treat election-day projections cautiously: official results and coalition negotiations come later.
