Strait of Hormuz / OmanDeveloping — the vessel and attacker have not been identified
Explosives attached by a small boat disable a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz
United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said a small boat attached two explosive devices above a tanker's waterline on Thursday, causing blasts and an engine-room fire about 25 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman. The crew was safe, the fire was extinguished and the ship resumed its voyage; authorities had not identified the vessel or attributed the attack at review time.
Why Americans should know: The strait carries a major share of the world's traded oil and gas, so attacks can raise shipping insurance, fuel prices and pressure for U.S. naval protection. October has been the busiest month for reported attacks there since March, but attribution remains unknown.
