Congo's Ebola outbreak passes 5,000 deaths as regional cases raise concern
Congolese government figures reported Saturday put the outbreak above 5,000 deaths and 10,000 infections, making it the second-deadliest Ebola outbreak recorded. The strain is Bundibugyo ebolavirus, for which there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment; linked cases elsewhere in Africa have increased cross-border concern, although the CDC says the current risk to the United States remains low.
Why Americans should know: The scale and cross-border spread test global disease surveillance, travel screening and emergency health systems. Americans should understand the danger without exaggerating it: CDC's latest assessment says the risk in the United States is low and no U.S. cases have been reported.
