Proposed U.S. tariffs over Russian oil strain relations
India warned Thursday that a U.S. bill authorizing tariffs of up to 100% on countries buying Russian energy could damage bilateral relations and disrupt global energy markets. The measure has passed Congress and was sent to President Donald Trump; India says it will continue buying affordable energy from multiple suppliers.
Why Americans should know: The tariff authority could affect U.S.–India trade negotiations, American exporters and global oil prices. Passage does not automatically impose a 100% tariff—the president would decide whether and how to use that authority.
